Plantar Warts

What causes plantar warts?

Plantar warts are common viral infections that appear as small hard areas on the skin. The same color as your skin, the most common type is rough and often wrinkled. If they're on the sole of the foot, they can be softer and flat, with small black spots inside. These can be very painful because of the pressure put on them by the weight of your body. Infection occurs through contact, especially in popular locations such as swimming pools, communal showers, changing rooms and gyms, where the warm and moist environment helps the virus to develop.

How to prevent plantar warts

You can prevent plantar warts by avoiding walking barefoot in damp, crowded places, and by wearing pool slippers, flip-flops or shoes that keep your feet dry. Wearing socks that can absorb sweat can also help.
